Lukavica Mountain, Montenegro

Lukavica mountain was in the past the place farmers use to visit in the summer with their cattle. They built small stone houses where they stayed for a couple of hot months. Those places were called Katuns. Many tribes in ancient Montenegro had katuns on certain mountains. Which mountain was going to be a Katun of certain tribe was decided by the King.
In katuns, the mountain offered green grass for cows and sheep all over the hot summer season.

Nowadays, Lukavica mountain is a very well known tourist site.

Big and Small Zurim are well known Montenegrin sites visited by hundreds of tourists every year. It is a very popular hiking destination. There are still few families that stay in the mountain with the cattle for the summer, but they are rare. People moved searching for a better and easier life, life in towns...

Lukavica Mountain, almost 2000 meters high, is a haven for different sorts of herbs that grow in this area and can stand  high and low temperatures, sun and snow, such as Hajducka trava (yarrow) and Ivanjsko cvijece ( lady's bedstraw).

In the bottom of the mountain, easily reached by local road heading from Niksic, there is a nice Camp, where you can stay for a few days and enjoy the mountain. However, I couldn't find more info on the camp. The place is called Eko kamp Luke. I continued to search on other sites and finally I found several nice photos of the camp at:

This structure made of stone is called Guvno. It's so typical for this part of the World. Lacking In other resources, montenegtians made everything out  of stone, you will conclude. It is a place not only convenient to sit in a circle and have a talk and gather, but also to put the harvested wheat and hit to collect the grain. 

Lukavica is the most beautiful in spring, everybody agrees. When snow melts from narrow mountain slopes, life explodes in different color flowers...
